It seems you have handled your self well to listen, and trying to understand the contexts of the participants.

Scott Barber have started addressing the core value of testing. I've derived this http://jlottosen.wordpress.com/2012/04/28/testing-can-add-business-value/ + http://jlottosen.wordpress.com/2012/04/17/the-core-purpose-of-softwaretesting/ which will be a keynote on a coming Danish testing conference ;)

It's important that all testing people start considering how they add value for their salary. Our value comes through our work. In order to be recognized as a catalyst for the product, it requires countless hours of succeeding in different projects. So, the more we educate us (not school) and try to find better ways to practice our craft, the more people involved in projects will see our value.

There is though one problem. A lot of people come to computer industry from universities and lower level education. They just don't know well enough testing because it's not teach to them (I think there was 1 course in our university). This is probably one of the reasons why software testing is not that well known. So, I do hope there could be ways to get more software testing courses on universities and lower level schools. They should be of course leaned towards context-driven testing and similar practices.

In the end it's about patience. This is a quote from Nikola Tesla:

"The scientific man does not aim at an immediate result. He does not expect that his advanced ideas will be readily taken up. His work is like that of the planter - for the future. His duty is to lay the foundation for those who are to come, and point the way."

AleksisAleksis Tulonenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13133465911654181086noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2405476812031211238.post-87906330212140072092012-06-15T10:52:09.963-04:002012-06-15T10:52:09.963-04:00Pete,

How well we "sell" testing to the people who matter, and get their buy-in. How well we show the "value" of the work we do and contribution to the overall project and product.
Remember, I spoke about this at STPCon 2010 in Las Vegas.

JimCalkelpdiverhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14278143481367031063noreply@blogger.com
